Wyoming firefighters put out a typical number of wildfires in 2015 despite a surge in blazes nationwide.

The Casper Star-Tribune reported that Wyoming state forester Bill Crapser says the state’s weather helped.

According to Crapser, Wyoming’s spring was wetter than normal and rain continued periodically through the summer. He says most of the state’s wildfires were in September and October this year.

Only one of Wyoming’s nine large wildfires required federal assistance, and that was the Cole Creek Fire in rural Evansville.

The state forester says there was only one large wildfire in 2014 but 30 of them in 2012.

Crapser says the state spent between $4 million and $5 million battling wildfires this year.
