Alaska Gov. Bill Walker has declared a state disaster in response to a fire that crippled water service in the village of Alatna.
The boiler fire April 15 damaged the community’s multi-purpose building and caused electrical damage that knocked out a water purification system.
The governor’s office says smoke damage closed the clinic and washeteria.
The Koyukuk River remains frozen. Villagers have been able to cross and haul potable water five miles from Allakaket.
The governor’s office says a temporary water access point will be established at the wellhead in Alatna to let residents get potable water until permanent repairs can be made.
A disaster declaration makes the village eligible for state public assistance, which can help pay for infrastructure repairs.
Alatna is 190 miles northwest of Fairbanks.
