A hacker who helped break into the computer systems of DirecTV, Farmers Insurance and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works is going to federal prison.
Mario Chuisano was given a three-year sentence last week and ordered to pay nearly $2.7 million in restitution.
Chuisano is from Staten Island, New York. Authorities say he was part of a hacker group called SwaggSec that carried out a series of computer attacks in 2012 and 2013, posting some stolen passwords and other information online.
In the attack against LA’s public works department, the group stole emails, identity and health information for more than 3,000 people.
Chuisano pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to damage a protected computer and possessing a sawed-off shotgun.
