Crews on Monday expect to finish cutting an emergency access road down to homes cut off by a massive mudslide last week on Whidbey Island in Washington.
Initial evacuations were ordered on 35 homes after Wednesday’s slide, but so far one home has been declared destroyed and four homes are yellow tagged, meaning day-access only, local news website .
According to the Island County Department of Emergency Management, the emergency road will allow homeowners to drive up to the top of the hillside where the slide took place.
The slide was 1,000 feet long and pushed earth over 600 yards down to the water, causing trees and dirt to smash into homes down below. No injuries were reported.
Roughly 20 properties were damaged, according to Island County Emergency Management.
