If a bill passes out of the Alaska Legislature, you might be handing an officer your phone instead of paper.

HB146, by Rep. Pete Higgins, would allow drivers to display proof of automobile insurance on a “personal mobile electronic device,” like a smartphone or tablet. The bill was passed out of the House Transportation Committee – its only committee of referral – on Tuesday. The bill now goes to the House Rules Committee, which could schedule it for the floor.

Currently, six states use online systems to verify vehicle insurance and 20 others are considering similar legislation, according to the Fairbanks Republican’s sponsor statement.

Higgins says the bill is a great way to modernize Alaska’s insurance system and allow more people to “live paperless.”
