A California prison doctor who was abruptly fired without explanation has won a $3.3 million wrongful termination lawsuit.
The Fresno Bee reported Dr. Muhammad Anwar signed a state contract in 1990 to provide surgical services to inmates and the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla.
The ballooning prison population forced Anwar to restrict his private practice to concentrate of the inmates.
But seven years ago, he was suddenly fired.
Besides breach of contract, Anwar’s lawsuit said his due process rights were violated and there was no evidence of Anwar wrongdoing.
Madera County jurors decided last week that Anwar was wrongly terminated and should get $3.3 million in damages.
Prisons spokesman Jeffrey Callison said Tuesday that the ruling was being reviewed and there was no comment.
