Four nonprofit groups say they will team up to organize and coordinate Oregon volunteers working on tsunami debris.
The World of Coos Bay reports the groups plan to create a data base of people who can monitor the Oregon coast, report debris accumulating and help in cleanup efforts.
An estimated 1.5 million tons of debris from the tsunami that struck Japan in 2011 was pulled out to sea and is circulating in the Pacific.
The paper said the groups are CoastWatch, Surfrider Foundation, SOLVE and Washed Ashore, along with an academic partner, Oregon Sea Grant.
They’re calling the organization the Oregon Marine Debris Team.
