Arizona does not have toll roads, but two state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would take the cars of suspected toll road evaders. The ability to crack down on toll evaders would help ensure revenue collection in case toll roads are in our future.
The Arizona Republic reported Republican state Reps. Karen Fann of Prescott and Russ Jones of Yuma introduced the bill aimed at fixing an existing law that green-lighted the Arizona Department of Transportation to team up with private firms on projects such as toll roads. The bill also authorizes private contractors to collect tolls.
State road building funds have been drying up and the state had hoped to tap private money to build roads. The bill is intended to make changes to improve prospects for public-private partnerships.
