Farmington, N.M., city councilors have passed an ordinance that will keep residents eligible for flood insurance coverage backed by the federal government.
The vote came less than a week after the northwestern New Mexico community was hit by heavy rain and high winds that left mud and debris throughout the city.
The council action means Farmington residents can maintain federal flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency required Farmington to make changes to its city code so its flood damage and prevention program would comply with federal standards.
