Utah Considers Cell Phone Ban on Texting, E-Mail While Driving

February 11, 2009

The Utah Legislature is considering a bill that would prohibit a person from using a wireless communication device for texting messages or e-mailing while operating a motor vehicle, among other acts.

Additionally, HB 281, which is being evaluated by the Utah House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee, also would prohibit a person from using a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle in a reduced speed school zone or public parking lot unless the operator is using a hands-free device; and would prohibit a person younger than 18 from using such a device while driving.

If passed, violating the bill would be considered an infraction, and the driver could be assessed points against his or her driving record.
