Union Pacific trains were moving through southern Arizona again Tuesday after completion of a temporary crossing to replace a 780-foot wooden trestle that was destroyed by fire during the weekend.
Trains began crossing through Yuma about midnight Monday after work was completed on the temporary crossing over the Fortuna Wash.
Work also has begun on a new concrete trestle to replace the one that burned Sunday, said Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis.
Fire investigators with Rural-Metro say the fire was caused by people, but they don’t have any evidence pointing to who or how it started.
The Union Pacific line sees about 50 trains each day. While repairs were made, Davis said those trains were rerouted over other Union Pacific tracks or some Burlington-Northern tracks.
