President Clinton signed legislation yesterday designed to provide compensation to victims of recent New Mexico wildfires. The new bill will affect the owners of more than 400 homes destroyed by fires that were sparked in May after the National Park Service set a prescribed burn.
Robert Dibblee, senior vice president, government relations for the National Association of Independent Insurers (NAII) expressed the association’s satisfaction that both wildfire victims, as well as the insurance companies that came to their aid, would soon have access to federal funds to provide reimbursement for fire-related losses.
Dibblee noted that the association had worked with Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.), Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and others to help bring about the new legislation and would continue its efforts to achieve the desired aims of that legislation in conjunction with the new federal office created for that purpose.
