A former loss representative for National General Insurance Co. and his mother allegedly ran a scheme in 2022 that involved false claims, a fake towing company and a $141,000 loss for the insurer.
Horace Kelly, 40, and his mom, Greta Patterson, a 62-year-old minister, were booked into jail in Coffee County in southeast Georgia after a months-long investigation, according to the Georgia Office of Insurance Commissioner and local news outlets.
Investigators said the scheme worked like this: Kelly, while on the job, created fake insurance claims then issued checks totaling $146,167 over a seven-month period, Douglas Now news site and Atlanta News First Wednesday. Patterson and Kelly allegedly cashed or deposited more than 100 checks in 2022. Evidence showed that some of the money ended up in Patterson’s personal bank account, authorities said.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation in August 2022 then notified the commissioner’s office. Kelly and Patterson were charged with insurance fraud and have been released on bond.
National General policyholders were not aware that claims had been filed on their behalf, the insurance commissioner’s office told one news .
The investigation is continuing and more charges may result.
