A North Carolina insurance agent is awaiting a court appearance next week after he was charged with fraudulently taking out a life insurance policy with Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Co.
The North Carolina Department of Insurance said that Matthew Jackson Swift, 42, of Mount Airy, was arrested earlier this month. He was released on $75,000 bond and is set for an initial court hearing on Feb. 19.
Swift in late 2023 allegedly forged documents and twice applied for a life insurance policy without the policyholder’s knowledge, then submitted claims against the policy, according to a DOI investigation, the department said in a bulletin.
National Association of Insurance Commissioners records show that Swift is a licensed producer in North Carolina. His license as a broker was cancelled or expired in 2023. He is authorized in life, accident, health and property and casualty insurance lines and last year was appointed with Progressive Southeastern Insurance. A local news report noted that Swift had previously worked with Southern Farm Bureau Life.
Swift could not immediately be reached for comment. The Mount Airy News that Swift had been arrested four months ago on similar charges. He told the newspaper that those allegations were false and were brought by his former spouse.
