Florida authorities have charged a Miami-area nurse practitioner and two others with creating false medical reports and attempting to defraud an auto insurance carrier out of more than $47,000.
Local news reports said that investigators with the state Department of Financial Services zeroed in on Ace Medical & Rehab Center after receiving complaints that people associated with the clinic were misleading insurance companies.
Clinic owner Yanirma Toledo, 42; nurse practitioner Maylett Leiva-Santana, 42; and therapist Lensky Jose Hernandez-Santiago, 43, were charged this week with the alleged scheme, Local10 TV news in Miami .
Investigators created their own fake crash report and had two undercover witnesses go to the clinic. The “patients” received checkups but no actual therapy, authorities told the news outlet. The clinic then billed insurance companies for multiple therapy sessions that never happened. United Auto Insurance Co. was billed for $47,310 for fake injuries, authorities said.
The trio is face prosecution on racketeering, theft, insurance fraud and conspiracy charges. They were booked into jail Tuesday in Miami.
