A 100-year-old apartment complex in Miami on Monday erupted into one of the largest blazes in decades after one man shot an employee at the site then set fire to the building.
The Miami Herald, the New York Times and others that police had apprehended a suspect in the shooting and arson. The shooting victim and three firefighters were taken to local hospitals.
The three-alarm fire, the first in decades in Miami, displaced more than 40 residents, forced rescues of several, and left the building heavily damaged. Fire officials said the complex, built in 1920, had a continuous attic with no firewalls, which may have allowed the fire to spread rapidly through the building.
The building, on NW Third Street, near downtown, is managed by Atlantic Housing Foundation and the owner is listed as Dallas-based AHF Temple Court, the news outlets reported.
