At least seven people were killed in central Alabama and more are missing after tornadoes and severe storms left a swath of damage across parts of the South.
Local news reports said that a large tornado ripped through historic Selma, Alabama, damaging the country club, downtown buildings and several homes. To the northeast, in Autagua County, at least 12 people were injured when mobile homes were lifted into air, the Associated Press reported. In Georgia, one person was killed when a tree fell on a vehicle, and a freight train was pulled from its tracks.
Winds also damaged an apartment complex and a high school in Atlanta. South of the city, in Griffin, high winds tore up parts of shopping area, according to local news outlets. A Hobby Lobby store lost part of its roof, and a car was flipped over in a nearby parking lot.
The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado also hit Mercer County, Kentucky.
In Mississippi, emergency officials reported that buildings were flattened in the northeast part of the state.
