A train carrying motor vehicles, polyvinyl and acetone derailed early Wednesday in Jones County, blocking roads and railroad traffic, a Jones County Fire Council spokesperson said.
The Hattiesburg American reports that no one was injured.
Public information officer Dana Bumgardner told the newspaper that cleanup likely will take two to three days.
Jones County Fire Council officials urged residents to use extreme caution as multiple agencies worked to clear the area. Bumgardner said everyone should avoid the area until cleanup is complete.
Several roads were blocked in the the area. A Norfolk Southern news release said the derailment would affect rail traffic between Meridian and New Orleans.
”(Norfolk Southern) is in the process of assessing the situation and will provide updates as information becomes available,” the release said. “Customers with traffic moving through this area should anticipate a delay of 24 to 48 hours.”
