Atlanta’s city council is taking action in response to the traffic deaths of three electric scooter riders.
Two council members introduced legislation Monday to stop adding new e-scooters permits, which Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says will enable the city to develop more regulations.
Councilmembers Carla Smith and Dustin Hillis said the ordinance would permanently repeal the planning department’s authorization to issue new e-scooter permits. Companies granted a permit before August 19 would be able to keep operating until that permit expires.
Atlanta police say the most recent death was 34-year-old Amber Ford, who was fatally hit by a car Saturday while on a scooter. And on Monday, police spokeswoman TaSheena Brown says , a 15-year-old boy was hit by a car and left with a head injury.
