Cumberland County commissioners are considering an ordinance to fine the owners of dogs who bite someone and causes them to need medical attention.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that the proposal to impose a $500 fine received preliminary approval Monday night.
The commission is expected to consider the idea again at a May 4 meeting.
Officials said about 1,400 people have reported dog bites in Cumberland County in the past year. That’s up about 40 percent from the average in the past few years.
Officials said packs of dogs have been reported in rural parts of the county.
Commission Chairman Ken Edge said he hopes the new ordinance would be a deterrent for owners of dangerous dogs.
