North Carolina legislators are stopping efforts to legalize marijuana to treat medical conditions.
A state House committee voted Wednesday to kill a medical marijuana bill. Advocates say marijuana helps to manage chronic pain, and relatives of injured military veterans spoke to the committee in favor of legalization. Other speakers from Christian organizations argued marijuana’s medical benefits haven’t been established.
Supporters argued more than 20 states have laws allowing medical marijuana.
The General Assembly last year legalized using an extract made from a marijuana plant to treat severe epilepsy.
