The city of Wilmington, N.C., is settling a lawsuit with a man who led police on a chase and was then bitten by a police dog that was pushed through his car window.
Area media outlets report the city has agreed to settle with Johnnie Williams for $82,000. The city is paying $25,000 and insurance covering the rest.
Authorities say Williams drove through a DUI checkpoint in 2013. But at the end of a chase, a police officer who is no longer with the department, lifted his police dog through the driver’s window and into Williams’ lap.
Williams was bitten in the face and shoulder, requiring stitches.
Williams’ attorney says while people need to be held responsible for their actions, the settlement is also about government representatives being held accountable too.
