Florida Gov. Rick Scott is asking that the federal government declare a disaster due to floods that caused extensive damage in the Panhandle.
The state estimates there was $29 million worth of damage caused by the heavy rains that fell the first week of July. A disaster declaration would make the state eligible for federal aid including money for debris removal.
State officials said the rain caused significant damage including damage to homes, roads and other public facilities in Bay, Holmes, Okaloosa, Walton and Washington counties.
Areas of the Panhandle received over 12 inches of rain between July 2 and July 7 while Walton and Washington counties received nearly 20 inches of rain.
Federal authorities will review Scott’s request and advise President Barack Obama whether to grant the declaration.
