A former on-air forecaster for The Weather Channel is suing the network, claiming it illegally discriminated against her because of her military service.
Nicole Mitchell, a meteorologist, says in the suit that her contract was not renewed by the channel in 2011 because managers were unhappy with her service in the Air Force Reserve’s 403rd Wing.
Mitchell is a captain in the unit, based at Biloxi’s Keesler Air Force Base, the Sun Herald reported. A unit squadron called the Hurricane Hunters flies into storms to gather weather data.
Mitchell said Weather Channel managers violated a 1994 federal law barring discrimination and retaliation against employees in the military.
The Weather Channel, a unit of NBC Universal, said in a statement the company supports the law and doesn’t comment on litigation.
