A massive remapping project is under way, re-evaluating the flood plains in counties and municipalities across metro Atlanta and the rest of the state.
The joint effort with the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been spearheaded by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources,
Officials said the project should be complete in 2012.
One area where the flood risk is being reassessed is a 107-mile stretch of the Upper Chattahoochee River Basin. Flood maps are also changing in other parts of Fulton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties.
Officials in those communities are gearing up for open houses, to be scheduled this fall. They said will display revised flood maps and feature local government staff and representatives from DNR and FEMA.
