A Georgia insurance agent who took premiums from a nonprofit pleaded guilty in Bibb County Superior Court to one count of insurance fraud.
Broadus W. Marshall Jr. of Macon was sentenced to 10 years of probation, 500 hours of community service and ordered to pay $33,969 in restitution, mostly to Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia.
Between August 2008 and September 2009, Marshall’s agency, which sold insurance policies to Goodwill, pocketed more than $100,000 in premiums instead of forwarding the checks to Goodwill’s insurer, Philadelphia Insurance Co.
Marshall’s attorney, Laura D. Hogue, told the court that Marshall had suffered a series of catastrophes, including his sister’s death from leukemia and his own diagnosis with prostate cancer.
Marshall has settled a civil suit and agreed to repay the insurance company $75,000.
