A volunteer fire department must stop answering calls because it failed to pay workers’ compensation premiums for its members.
Marshall County emergency management director Tom Hart said the state fire marshal’s office issued the cease-and-desist order Monday for Big Wheeling Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
WTOV of Steubenville, Ohio, said it’s the second time the department was told to shut down. It was idled for six months in 2009 for the same reason.
Hart said other fire departments in Marshall and Ohio counties will handle calls in the area.
When fire departments complained last year, the state put planned premium increases on hold.
The current rates are in effect until July 1 while legislators try to address safety and liability issues.
