The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) elected Florida Commissioner Kevin McCarty to be president-elect effective Jan. 1, 2011 at its recent meeting in Orlando.
McCarty served as vice president of the NAIC during 2010.
It remains to be seen whether McCarty will be able to take office, however. His job as Florida regulator may hinge on the outcome of the November elections for governor and chief financial officer– officials who have a say in the naming of insurance commissioner.
Other officers elected by the NAIC include Oklahoma’s Kim Holland as vice president and Louisiana’s James Donelon as secretary-treasurer. Susan Voss is the incoming NAIC president.
McCarty became Florida’s first appointed insurance commissioner in January 2003. He is responsible for Florida’s insurance market, including oversight of company solvency, policy forms and rates, market investigations and new insurance business. McCarty began his career in public service in 1988 on workers’ compensation issues with the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security.
