Golf carts are a common sight in South Carolina, just not on state roads.
But legislation up for debate this week in a House subcommittee would allow people to drive golf carts on the state’s secondary roads as long as they are within five miles of their home or business during daylight hours.
The current law allows people to drive carts within two miles of their homes or businesses.
Drivers still would have to get a permit for $5 and show they have insurance and have a valid drivers’ license.
State Rep. Todd Rutherford of Columbia has been known to drive a tricked-out golf cart to the Statehouse for sessions.
