Former linebacker Keith McCants, who played for Alabama before a stint with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is serving 10 days in jail after being arrested for driving without insurance.
Police stopped McCants, 39, of Mobile as he drove a 1998 Oldsmobile on Interstate 65 on Nov. 29, said Sgt. Gerald Thornton of the Chickasaw Police Department. McCants appeared in court last week and he agreed to begin serving time instead of paying a $610 fine, the Press-Register reported Tuesday.
McCants signed a $7.4 million contract with the Buccaneers in 1990 after playing at Alabama, but his pro career was short and plagued by injuries.
McCant’s legal troubles since leaving the NFL have included charges of cocaine possession, bad-check writing and theft. He is awaiting trial after being arrested in Mobile on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and loitering for a drug activity.
