West Virginia will make good on a promise to open a new Capitol cafeteria on the first full day of this year’s legislative session.
The former cafeteria was closed in October 2006 after health inspectors found roaches, filthy equipment, toxic levels of cleaning solvents and other food code violations.
The new, 260-seat food court will open Thursday, Department of Administration spokeswoman Diane Holley said.
Most of the food court’s potential customers are the thousands of state employees who work at the Capitol Complex.
The state spent nearly $4 million to renovate and bring the basement kitchen and dining spaces up to code. A Tuesday tour showcased gleaming walk-in coolers, state-of-the-art ovens, polished countertops and cookware, and the dining area’s art-deco styled interior.
The food court will be overseen by Guest Services Inc. The Fairfax, Va.-based company provides services to 250 museums, resorts, colleges, conference centers and senior centers nationwide.
