Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has appointed incoming Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney to replace outgoing Insurance Commissioner George Dale 10 days early.
Dale is resigning from office effective December 31.
Chaney, a Republican from Vicksburg, defeated Democrat Gary Anderson in the insurance commissioner’s race. Anderson’s campaign lost momentum after his Democratic primary win over Dale.
Chaney will serve on an appointed basis from January 1, 2008, until he is sworn in on January 10, 2008.
He is resigning his seat in the Mississippi Senate, effective December 31, 2007.
Dale sent a letter to the governor indicating he plans to leave office early.
