Driver’s license requirements for teens and increasing minimum amounts for property damage liability insurance are among bills pre-filed for Kentucky’s 2006 legislative session, which is still six months away.
Driver’s licenses for teens
Increased restrictions would be placed on teenage drivers according to a bill proposed by Rep. Tom Burch by expanding the graduated license program to create an “intermediate license.” Anybody under 18 would have to hold their instruction permit for 180 days before applying for an intermediate license and then hold an intermediate license for 180 days and complete a driver training program before applying for an operator’s license. That training would include at least 60 hours of supervised driving, including at least ten hours at night. Teens holding an intermediate license would not be allowed to drive between midnight and 6 a.m. or at any time with three or more people under age 18 who are not related to the driver.
Car insurance
Sen. Tom Buford has filed a bill that would increase the minimum amount of property damage liability insurance required on vehicle policies from $10,000 to $25,000.
