Fifty North Carolina counties declared disasters areas after storms swept through the state last year will open centers today to help people still recovering from the damage. State lawmakers have agreed to provide $247 million in disaster relief.
The centers provide a one-stop application service for hurricane victims who have exhausted other avenues of financial assistance and need additional aid. Applications will be accepted through May 27.
The remnants of Hurricane Frances struck western North Carolina on Sept. 7, dumping more than 14 inches of rain on some areas. Nine days later, what was left of Hurricane Ivan hit the region. Eleven people died and the storms caused millions of dollars in damage.
