The Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars will receive a reimbursement of $42,000, which will be distributed to VFW posts statewide, due to a lawsuit settlement with the Alabama Insurance Commission. The Limestone County VFW Post 4765 will receive $1,200 as its share of the settlement.
The lawsuit, filed by the commission, claimed that the VFW violated state regulations concerning insurance transactions. In the settlement, the VFW states that it “in no way intended to violate any insurance law or regulation and that it desired to resolve all matters” related to the order of insurance bonds.
In October, a Limestone County grand jury indicted VFW Quartermaster Travis Whaley of Alexandria on charges of insurance fraud. Whaley’s trial is set for April. The trial revolves around Whaley’s order to remove two members from the local VFW, Commander Larry Truman and District Commander Jim Manley, both of Athens. The indictment stems from surety bonds sold to the Limestone County chapter.
