The damage toll has been counted from flash flooding in South Texas on June 19.
Edinburg City Manager Ramiro Garza told reporters that about 300 houses and 22 businesses were damaged after up to 6 inches of rainfall over two hours caused flooding in the Hidalgo County seat. He gave the damage toll as about $12 million.
Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios said the heavy rain caused flooding in 21 areas of the South Texas border county. He says six or seven of those areas still had standing water as of Monday afternoon.
Officials credit a drainage ditch dug across a South Alamo Road, a major Edinburg street, with lowering floodwaters in many areas. Nine other streets remain closed.
