A south Louisiana parish president is calling on residents to contact out-of-state relatives and friends to enlist help in the fight against projected drastic flood insurance costs.
Changes to the National Flood Insurance Program could mean many thousands of people who live in low-lying areas will likely see huge premium increases if they don’t elevate their homes.
The Courier reports that Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet addressed more than 100 residents at Houma’s Municipal Auditorium on Aug. 20. He said people in other states must get involved to build momentum in Congress for relief from the changes.
He said there is a perception in some parts of the country that the flood zones are only lined with vacation homes.
