The Denham Springs, La., City Council has approved changes to its flood ordinances.
The Advocate reports the Federal Emergency Management Agency had given the city a deadline of April 3 to make the changes or lose the right for city residents to purchase federal flood insurance.
Earlier this month, the council approved new FEMA flood maps, which were also required as part of the National Flood Insurance Program.
The changes to the regulations require all construction or substantial improvements within the city to be built with materials resistant to flood damage.
Under the revised ordinance, new construction or buildings that are substantially changed also must be anchored so that they will not float away during a flood.
