Oklahoma, Gov. Brad Henry declared a state of emergency for all 77 Oklahoma counties and state officials implemented emergency response preparations as a winter storm blanketed the state overnight with freezing rain, sleet and snow.
The state capitol and most government offices, along with schools and businesses, remain closed. The National Weather Service said a winter storm warning remained in effect until midnight Jan. 29 and cautioned that travel would be hazardous or impossible. The NWS also said power outages would increase throughout the day as snow accumulates on ice covered power lines.
Gov. Henry’s declaration provides a formal mechanism for local governments to seek reimbursement for recovery costs through the state’s disaster public assistance program, should conditions warrant. A companion order signed by the governor waives certain size and weight restrictions for vehicles that will be needed to move emergency response equipment and supplies to affected areas.
