The Oklahoma House of Representatives has passed legislation to require home-based day care centers to carry liability insurance.
House members voted 93-7 for the measure. It now goes to the Senate for a vote.
The bill, called Demarion’s Law, is the result of injuries suffered by 3-year-old Demarion Pittman while in the custody of an uninsured Oklahoma City day care center.
Demarion suffered a heat stroke after being left in a stifling vehicle last August. Demarion’s temperature was 117 degrees when he was finally pulled from the van. He suffered brain damage and was in a coma for two months.
His mother, Edna Pittman, has said Demarion’s medical expenses have topped more than $1 million since the incident and that it will cost millions to care for him in the future.
