The Hartford recently named John Kinney as the company’s chief claims officer and also as president of Heritage Holdings, a unit which oversees The Hartford’s domestic and international property/casualty run-off operations.
He succeeds Andrew Pinkes, who recently joined XL Group’s insurance operations as executive vice president, global head of claims.
In this new role, Kinney will lead The Hartford’s property/casualty and group benefits claims operations and its more than 5,000 employees, reporting to Doug Elliot, president of commercial markets at The Hartford.

Kinney, who joined The Hartford in 2003, most recently led the company’s property/casualty field claims organization, responsible for workers’ compensation, automobile, property and general liability claims handling and claims customer support. His previous role at Heritage Holdings focused on complex claims, including asbestos, silica, environmental damage and other latent injury long tail claims.
Prior to joining The Hartford, Kinney held various legal positions in The Travelers Companies’ special liability group, where he focused on the management of asbestos litigation.
The Hartford’s property/casualty claims team handles more than 1 million new auto, general liability, workers’ compensation, and property claims per year. The company’s group benefits claims services nearly 550,000 new short and long term disability, leave management, and life and accidental death claims per year.
