Based on a Federal Trade Commission complaint, a federal court has shut down a website offering templates to help produce fake driver’s licenses and state identification cards. The FTC complaint, filed earlier this month, alleges that Jeremy Martinez of Tarzana, California, sold 45 days of access to fake ID templates for $29.99.
The site, called “newid,” provided templates for the creation of fake driver’s licenses for several states, including California, New York and Florida. The complaint was part of an FTC crackdown aimed at identity theft.
Over 750,000 consumers are victims of identity theft per year, according to the government. Criminals often use fake IDs to open bank and credit card accounts in another person’s name, exposing the victim to financial liability and credit-report problems.
