The U.S. Department of Agriculture says a portion of Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula has been designated as a natural disaster area following a summer hailstorm that damaged crops.
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced the designation for Grand Traverse County.
With the designation, agricultural producers including farmers that had losses due to hail Aug. 1 may be eligible for USDA Farm Service Agency emergency loans. The loans can be used to meet various recovery needs, including the replacement of livestock or essential items such as equipment.
Producers in Antrim, Benzie, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee and Wexford counties also are eligible to apply for emergency loans. The deadline to apply for loans is Aug. 13 and the Farm Service Agency will review them. Additional information about the loans is posted online.
