A truck driver from Oklahoma has been awarded more than $2 million for injuries sustained while unloading Dollar General merchandise at a store in Troy, Mo..
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a federal jury in St. Louis granted the $2.2 million award this week to Gregory Baird.
Baird was unloading merchandise in the dark on Black Friday in 2007 when an improperly loaded 38-pound box fell on his head. Attorney John Anderson says it knocked him unconscious and injured his neck and back, injuries that still linger.
Dollar General attorneys presented testimony that Baird could have waited to unload the next day. Anderson says he would have been fired by his employer, Hogan Trucking, if he waited.
An attorney for Dollar General declined comment.
