Wisconsin state troopers are aggressively enforcing the new state law that requires drivers to wear seat belts.
The law that went into effect in July gives officers the right to pull over and ticket drivers for not wearing seat belts. The previous law allowed for those citations only if the driver were stopped for another violation.
Statistics show that state troopers are putting the new law into effect.
In June, State Patrol troopers cited about 1,600 drivers for not wearing a seat belt. In July, that number soared to nearly 3,800.
The same trend held true for passengers. Fewer than 400 were cited in June, and more than 800 received citations in July.
Brown County sheriff’s deputy Dustan Peterson says numbers should drop as motorists learn their lesson.
