Government food inspectors say Ohio-grown tomatoes are still safe to eat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says Ohio tomatoes are not part of a salmonella outbreak linked to three types of raw tomatoes.
McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Burger King, and Kroger are among companies that have voluntarily withdrawn red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes unless they have been grown in certain areas.
Ohio ranks fifth in tomato production nationwide.
Ohio Agriculture Director Robert Boggs says shoppers can buy Ohio tomatoes with confidence.
Cases of Salmonella were reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
