Snowmobilers caught operating their sleds while drunk are fined, but the offense doesn’t show up on their regular driving record.
The Department of Natural Resources’ snowmobile safety administrator wants to change that.
Gary Eddy says the majority of the 25 snowmobiling deaths this season involved alcohol. Eddy says safety could be improved by tying a drunken snowmobiling infraction to a person’s driver’s license, as is done in neighboring states.
Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs spokesman Morris Nelson says the proposal would be too costly.
But, Eddy says the state is already reworking its citation electronic database.
