Dane County, Wis. has suffered more than $3 million in damage to public and private properties as a result of heavy rains and flooding, its top official said earlier this week.
Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said 798 homes have reported damage. It ranges from minor basement flooding to fewer than a dozen houses that are a total loss. The damage to private property is more than $2 million, Falk said.
Public properties such as highways and governmental buildings have reported damage of more than $1.37 million due to the water, Falk said. Damage estimates are likely to rise in the coming weeks, she said.
The damage should be enough for the federal government to issue a disaster declaration for the county, Wisconsin’s second largest, Falk said.
“We believe our citizens deserve the aid of the federal government and hope they will concur,” she said.
Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives arrived in the county on Tuesday to begin assessing damaged areas
