Legislation that would establish a licensing exemption for insurance company and agency employees who make routine changes to existing policies has cleared both Houses of the North Dakota Legislature.
The National Association of Independent Insurers supported language in Senate Bill 2144 that offers a limited exemption for customer service representatives who handle routine customer requests on existing policies, such as adding a new car or driver. SB 2144 is now headed to the governor. Under the 1999 federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, at least 29 states must enact agent licensing laws that are either uniform or reciprocal by November 2002, or face federal intervention.
