London-based broker Cooper Gay & Co Ltd has announced the appointment of Charles Gibbs as Managing Director, Marine, within the Marine and Aerospace Division, effective immediately.
He will have overall responsibility for the company’s marine hull business, “leading Cooper Gay’s strategic initiative to develop the marine ‘retail’ element of its business alongside and to complement its existing wholesale and facultative reinsurance offering,” said the bulletin.
Gibbs has over 30 years’ experience. He joins Cooper Gay from Marsh, where he was Managing Director, Global Marine Practice, and previously with Sedgwick. He will report to Steve Barton, Chief Executive of Marine and Aerospace in this newly created role.
Barton commented: “We face challenging conditions in our business, but exciting times lie ahead in the execution of this strategy. Cooper Gay’s sister company in the CGSC Group, Junge & Co, is the leading maritime industry insurance broker in Germany and is the model for the retail aspect of Cooper Gay London’s Marine division.”
He added that, although the company would “not compete with existing distribution channels, there are large parts of the world where a more retail focus is appropriate for growing our business and Charles will be integral to that goal.”
Gordon Newman, Chief Executive Officer of Cooper Gay and Newman Martin and Buchan LLP commented: “Cooper Gay is well known in the London and global markets for its marine insurance abilities which have been additionally enhanced by CGSC’s recent acquisition of NMB.”
